A summer pavilion in Bar Harbor
Bask in Sol’s Cliff House’s airy gilded-age living room, a setting that echoes Mount Desert Island’s high society days when Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, Astors and others arrived for long summer stays in the many cottages then adorning the east side of the island, centered in Bar Harbor. The past is so palpable here that if you listen closely maybe you can hear an orchestra churning out the Charleston. With deep cozy couches for lounging, a big desk for work, and seven sets of French doors on three sides letting light and magic flood your experience, this is indeed a special pavilion of a room, filling the entire south end of the house. Light a fire in the fireplace, throw open the doors to Acadia on one side and Frenchman Bay on the other, or just turn on the satellite TV/DVD player and relax.

Sol's Cliff House is set in a memorable place. Every night, all 22 of us enjoyed a sort of roving party, beginning with drinks on the terrace overlooking the bay, moving to dinner in the dining room at an incredible table that accommodated all of us, and culminating with dessert in the living room where we lit a fire and played games and told stories until the sun came up. None of us will ever forget those nights by the fire with the lovely Maine air all around us and the sound of the lobstermen down on the bay.
